    Job Title: Controller

    Position Summary:

    Community Foundation Boulder County (CFBC) seeks a Controller who shares CFBC’s vision for building a more equitable Boulder County. The ideal candidate will possess a thorough understanding of all aspects of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and have excellent communication, technology, analytical and management skills. The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer (CFO/COO) and is expected to be a key advisor to the CFO/COO. The Controller will supervise the accounting team and is responsible for overseeing all day-to-day aspects of the financial functions for the foundation. We are seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and hard-working professional dedicated to serving Boulder County with the entrepreneurial spirit this community embodies. This is a full-time, exempt position (100% full-time equivalent (FTE)).

    Organizational Evolution:

    Over the past two years, Community Foundation Boulder County has stepped up to lead the philanthropic aspects of multiple disaster-recovery efforts, not only collecting millions of dollars in donations but also convening community leaders and deploying resources quickly. Coupled with CFBC’s ongoing efforts to respond to COVID and its impact on Boulder County, CFBC has increased its role as an integral connector between private funding, public actors, and the nonprofit sector. It is now essential that the fundraising and donor relations work of the Foundation expand to meet our critical role in the community as well as exceed donor and fund holder expectations.     Community Foundation Boulder County is a community catalyst, responding to immediate needs and anticipating future challenges. As a collaborator and convener, we promote inclusivity and provide leadership on key issues, working with community‐minded individuals and organizations that want to make a difference.

    Established in 1991, Community Foundation Boulder County currently has assets totaling more than $100 million. In 2021, the foundation received over $15 million in contributions and distributed over $10 million in grants to nonprofit organizations. CFBC has granted more than $120 million to nonprofit organizations since its inception and recently raised over $43 million to support fire recovery efforts in Boulder County.

    Responsibilities

    • Supervise and coordinate the day-to-day financial operations
    • Manage accounting staff
    • Develop and manage the process for the creation of the annual organizational and departmental budgets
    • Prepare the Finance and Operations department budget
    • Ensure accuracy of accounting for all grants and program-related investments
    • Manage the execution of investment purchases and redemptions
    • Ensure the accuracy of the investment portfolio by reviewing monthly reconciliations
    • Manage effective commercial banking relationships and investment manager relationships
    • Supervise and coordinate preparations for the annual audit
    • Supervise preparation of all required tax reports and payment of required state and federal taxes
    • Assist the CFO in preparing for investment and audit committee meetings of the board of trustees
    • Prepare analyses of investment portfolio performance returns, as well as analyses of individual investment accounts, pools, and managers
    • Ensure expenditures are paid and recorded in a timely manner
    • Establish, monitor, and enforce effective internal controls
    • Manage a documented system of accounting policies and standard operating procedures (SOP’s), while exploring opportunities for process improvement
    • Manage the preparation of all financial reporting, including annual financial statements and monthly reports
    • Analyze financial results as well as specific trends or issues
    • Streamline and develop efficiencies utilizing the new accounting system
    • Improve financial reporting out of accounting system – evaluating and improving functionality of chart of accounts, creating new statements, developing cashflows documents, etc.
    • Manage the preparation of regular forecasts of financial information
    • Manage organization insurance policies, including annual renewals and assessment of coverage
    • Respond to inquiries regarding accounting and finance in a timely and accurate manner
    • Collaborate with other departments and ensure proper communication of financial information
    • Represent CFBC as required to external and internal constituencies
    • Serve as primary backup to the CFO
    • Carry out such other duties as shall be assigned

    Skills and Competencies

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting; CPA or CMA preferred
    • Minimum of 7 years accounting and finance experience
    • Previous supervisory skills with a minimum of 5 years managing staff
    • Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and auditing standards within the context of a community foundation
    • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the workplace and in communities
    • Ability to read, understand and extrapolate key financial information from custodian and individual investment manager reports
    • Technology savvy with deep knowledge of accounting and reporting software
    • Ability to translate financial concepts to - and to effectively collaborate with - colleagues in other areas who do not necessarily have a finance background
    • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
    • Demonstrates initiative and follow-through and will meet deadlines, attention to detail, and strong project management skills
    • Ongoing commitment to improving skills and knowledge acquisition
    • Ability to handle confidential issues with discretion
    • Action-oriented, self-starter who can work well independently and in teams
    • Comfortable serving collaborative teams of colleagues both on‐site and in remote locations
    • The ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
    • Thorough understanding of CFBC’s legal environment and tax-exempt status
    • Leadership skills such as to invite and sustain the confidence of CFBC’s board and staff, and to promote the credibility of CFBC in the community at-large
    • High energy and passion for CFBC’s mission is essential, including a commitment to seeking ways to create a more equitable Boulder County

    Compensation

    This is a full‐time position (100% FTE) or 40 hours per week. The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $120,000. CFBC offers a competitive benefits package including health and dental insurance, paid time off, retirement contribution and match, parking pass, and Limited Health Reimbursement Account (employer funding of $2,000 per year).
